Fingerprint kits - How useful are they? Free Fingerprint Kits and ID cards are a popular giveaway at safety fairs. How useful are fingerprints and ID Cards in recovering a missing child?

Fingerprints for Identification

Thousands of parents have fingerprinted, DNA sampled and created ID Cards for their children. These safety measure give parents a sense of security, but are they really useful?

When children go missing, most of the time, they return safely on their own. However, in kidnappings and other dangerous cases, time is of the essence.

According to the U.S. Attorney General:

"Fast action is necessary since,
1) there is typically over a two hour delay in making the initial missing child report (60%), and
2) the vast majority (74%) of the abducted children who are murdered are dead within three hours of the abduction.
Because of these critical time features, it is important to respond quickly with a neighborhood canvass and search of the area."

Fingerprints are not useful in an initial neighborhood canvass or search of the area. Fingerprints can only identify a child that you can locate or show that a child was at a specific location through the prints they leave on objects. Neither scenario contributes to a rapid search and recovery.
